Competition Requirements for

Welding

Welders make, join and repair metal parts for machinery and equipment using welding techniques. Welding is a fabrication process that uses heat to fuse materials such as metals or thermoplastics. Welders can work across the automotive, building construction, mining, farming and fabrication industries.

Employer: Toi-Ohomai Institute of Technology

Involvement in the skill/industry: I have been in the Fabrication / Welding Industry since 1988 training as a boilermaker welder on completion of my apprenticeship I continued to grow my skill set in many different parts of the industry leading me to my current position as the Academic leader for the engineering team at Toi-Ohomai.

Why volunteer with WorldSkills New Zealand: I have trained many Fabricator / welders over the years and believe that vocational Skill competitions are a fantastic way to help the local industry to be even better, I enjoy watching young people succeed in their careers and personal lives and believe that WorldSkills competitions provide this opportunity.

Advice to competitors: Keep focused on the task at hand and stick to the plan, don’t let distractions get in your way, attention to detail is very important when competing but make sure you enjoy the experience.
